Building Recovery Updates
03/04/2025
We are working diligently to restore our building to full operation. Major repairs have remained on hold pending the review of our insurance claim. Unfortunately, our property insurance company has denied the claim, leaving us without coverage for the damage, water mitigation, or reconstruction.
While this presents a major financial challenge, we are taking careful, calculated steps to fully reopen as quickly as possible. We are working with our legal counsel to craft an appeal with our insurance company and are getting quotes for reconstruction and roof replacement. Reopening of the main entrance and south side of the building could take anywhere from two to six months from the time of reconstruction.
As we face this unexpected financial burden, we need your support—now more than ever. Our Northfield center has been a special place for the past 25 years: a place to learn, grow, find support, and forge lasting friendships. Consider a donation today to help us continue to be a pillar in the community for years to come.
Thank you for your patience, resilience, and flexibility. We will continue to post updates as we work through this process.

Since last week's roof leak and water damage, we've made a lot of progress with clean up, repairs, and inspections of the building. While it will be some time before the building is completely repaired and all areas are open, the very good news is that we are able to start holding some programs on-site starting Monday, February 10.
In case you missed it, ABC7 Eyewitness News sent out a crew on Wednesday to interview our Executive Director and a few of our members. They discussed the impact this unfortunate event is having on NSSC and the folks who count on us as a place to belong, to meet friends, to learn, and to find support. As you can see in the news report, the damage was quite extensive to the south side of the building, which will remain closed until further notice. All visitors must enter though the North entrance only.
Beginning Feb. 10, in-person Lifelong Learning programs will resume on-site, including the Fitness Center. The Lending Closet will be open for pick up and drop off of durable medical equipment. The Caféwill resume its regular hours on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, serving out of the Golder dining room. Tax appointments will be held on-site starting Thursday, Feb. 13.
A temporary Welcome Desk will be set up at the north entrance. You can check in there with any questions.
Senior & Family Services staff will continue working out of our Niles office, and Administration staff will continue working remotely.
If you have questions or needs, please call 847.784.6000 during our regular business hours: Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. We will also post updates on this webpage.
We will continue to keep you updated. Thank you for your support and patience.

Our beloved building at 161 Northfield Road sustained significant water damage overnight on Thursday, January 30 and into Friday, January 31. The areas affected include the main entrance, Welcome Desk, Shop, and Administration where social services, reception, finance, marketing & development, and the executive director's offices are located. This is an evolving situation, and we are working diligently to repair the damage and ensure the building is safe. In the meantime, all operations have moved to remote status. We appreciate your patience and will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
All on-site Lifelong Learning classes or activities are cancelled through February 7. Hybrid and online programs are being offered online only. For more information about Lifelong Learning programs, please email LifelongLearning@nssc.org or call 847.784.6030. While staff will not be on-site to answer your call, they will be checking voicemail throughout the day and will return your call.
For all other inquiries, please call 847.784.6000 or 847.864.3721. House of Welcome Adult Day Services and our Niles Social Services office were not affected and are operating with regular business hours.
Our steadfast Facilities Team has been on-site around the clock working closely with clean-up crews and contractors to remove water damaged furniture, drywall, and carpeting, and work toward completely drying the affected areas.
Our building has been a special place for the past 25 years: a place to learn, grow, find support, and forge lasting friendships. The 40,000 square foot roof needs to be replaced—at the cost of more than $1 million. We need you, our community of support, to help us through the challenges ahead so we may continue to be a pillar of this community for the next 25 years and beyond.
