Adult Protective Services (APS) Program Benefits from Shamrock Shindig

By Caroline Maddalozzo

Shamrock Shindig helps supports North Shore Senior Center’s Adult Protective Services (APS) program, which restores the dignity and safety of adults with disabilities ages 18 to 59, and seniors who find themselves as victims of abuse and may have few resources to change their situations and protect themselves. These services are provided to residents of Maine, New Trier and Northfield Townships in the northern suburbs of Chicago which, together, comprise 14 communities. North Shore Senior Center investigates an average of 240 cases annually, with financial exploitation being the most frequent offense.

When a report is made to the Illinois Department on Aging through the statewide 24-hour hotline, a social worker is assigned to investigate the most serious reports expeditiously, even in the middle of the night. Once a report has been received by social workers, the Center is obligated to investigate for the next 30 days. The Center’s APS team must determine whether the report can be substantiated and what follow-up action is necessary.

“Our goal is to keep our clients living safely in the community and ensure that they obtain the needed supports to reduce the risks of further abuse, neglect or exploitation,” said Holly Lichtman, LCSW, supervisor of the Center’s APS program.
