Support Our Annual Giving Tree
By Caroline Maddalozzo
Around Thanksgiving, you can see the staff at North Shore Senior Center preparing for our annual Giving Tree. When you walk through the doors, you’ll see Property Operation Technician Al Davis and Maintenance Technician Eddie Colon putting the tree together and untangling the strings of lights that will soon hang from the branches. For days on end, you’ll find Intake Specialist/ Receptionist Annette Burke and Receptionist Joyce Frank writing down each individual name and gift request made on a holiday tag. Then, you’ll see them patiently tie a strand of yarn around the tag to make it into a beautiful ornament. Once Al gives the okay, Annette and Joyce will spend their free time hanging each tag on the tree and constantly rearranging them as more and more people take tags away.
Last year, North Shore Senior Center hung 346 tags from its Giving Tree, and we hope to offer our resources to help others in need this holiday season. The requested gifts are ones many of us take for granted and are all $25 or less. Some of the requests include: socks, gloves, calendars, treats for pets, robes and lap blankets, postage stamps and note cards, small luxuries like cookies, candy and lotions, and gift cards to grocery stores.
Case Manager Dan Davis from Senior and Family Services said that clients have no expectations for the gifts they receive. “It meant a lot to my clients last year . . . they were shocked that I mentioned something at the office and somebody cared enough to get them something.” The gifts are currently being hand-delivered by their case managers, and each client will soon be ecstatic to receive the gift you purchased for them.
For many of our clients, this small item from the Giving Tree will be the only gift they receive for the holidays. We hope you will consider helping a senior in need. To learn how you can make a Giving Tree donation, call 847.784.6000.Back to Blogs
