Shamrock Shindig Supports Adult Protective Services Program
North Shore Senior Center would like to extend a special "Thank You" to all of those who contributed to our Shamrock Shindig event, which supported our Adult Protective Services (APS) program! We also want to thank our sponsors: Help at Home (Premier Sponsor), Avanti, Chestnut Square, Dogbotz Boneyard, Humana, Mather Lifeways and Tom & Mary Clare White.
The success of Shamrock Shindig will support our APS program, which restores the dignity and safety of adults with disabilities ages 18 to 59, and seniors, who find themselves as victims of abuse and may have few resources to change their situations and protect themselves. These services are provided to residents of Maine, New Trier, and Northfield Townships in the northern suburbs of Chicago which, together, comprise 14 communities.
North Shore Senior Center investigates 240 cases annually, with financial exploitation being the most frequent offense.
Victims of abuse come from every socio-economic level. According to the American Psychological Association, most older adults suffering from abuse experience it in their own homes and, frequently, at the hands of family members. Abuse takes many forms, and in most cases victims are subjected to more than one type of mistreatment. In Illinois, 58 percent of elder abuse reports allege financial exploitation; approximately 22 percent allege physical abuse; 39 percent allege active or passive neglect; and 43 percent allege emotional abuse. In the 2016 Fiscal Year alone, North Shore Senior Center’s APS program impacted 363 people. Each case North Shore Senior Center investigates costs the Center approximately $1,600. Historically, the State of Illinois paid for half the cost, but now we subsidize $950 per case because of ever-increasing cuts in government funding.
This year, North Shore Senior Center partnered with Hackney’s on Lake in Glenview, IL. Guests were offered a variety of foods and an open bar. Dessert was generously donated by Beth’s Little Bake Shop in Evanston, IL, and Eli’s Cheesecake in Chicago, IL.
North Shore Senior Center raised a little over $3,500 and sold out the event with 130 registrants. Thank you again for supporting our Shamrock Shindig event, and we are looking forward to next year!Back to Blogs
