Celebrating 60 Years of Service

National Professional Social Work Month Celebration

Social workers stand up for millions of people daily. “They stand up by comforting people who are experiencing devastating illnesses and mental health crises, ensuring they get the best care while on the road to recovery. They stand up and support our brave military personnel, veterans and their families. They work in communities and with national, state and local government to provide services and pass legislation to stand with and help the most vulnerable” (National Association of Social Workers 2017 Stand Up Campaign).

National Professional Social Work Month is celebrated in March, which gives our nation’s 600,000 plus social workers an opportunity to highlight the important contributions they make to society and of course North Shore Senior Center. Social workers confront some of the most challenging issues facing individuals, families, communities and society and forge solutions that help people reach their full potential and  our staff is no different. North Shore Senior Center social workers stand up for the seniors they serve each and every day. Last year we provided 84,856 hours of service to 23,694 seniors through our programs and services. We work with seniors to enhance their quality of life and allow them to remain independent and in their homes for as long as possible.

This year the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) will commemorate Social Work Month with a “Social Workers Stand Up!” campaign. This campaign will educate the public about the contributions of social workers and give social workers and their allies tools they can use to elevate the profession. Activities will be updated so be sure to check back regularly for the latest Social Work Month activities.

The National Association of Social Workers explains that, “many people still misunderstand exactly what a social worker is and the positive contributions social workers make in our society. For instance, NASW in 2016 asked Harvard Medical School’s Health Publications to correct a definition of social workers that seriously downplayed the role social workers play in providing mental health services in our nation” for their reasoning on the 2017 campaign title.

North Shore Senior Center and our social workers are supportive of the “Social Workers Stand Up!” campaign. For more information on the National Association of Social Workers “Social Workers Stand Up!” campaign, please visit https://goo.gl/ssbyp5
