Celebrating 60 Years of Service

#GivingTuesday at North Shore Senior Center

#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled
by the power of social media and collaboration.
This year, North Shore Senior participated in the national event, which took place on November 28, 2017. Our #GivingTuesday donations went towards our House of Welcome Adult Day Services program, which from its opening in 1983, has been a place for individuals with memory loss from
Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias
to feel valued, safe and respected.

House of Welcome offers a unique day program of structured, therapeutic, small-group activities in a comfortable, homelike setting. Participants with early as well as more advanced memory loss enjoy meaningful activities and friendships, while caregivers benefit from time on their own.

To get a sense of what the House of Welcome is, we ask you read this short story from the eyes of a participant:
An Active Morning “I arrive and am greeted warmly at the door. I feel welcome and important. It’s my job to help make the morning coffee. I join a group of other participants around the table to enjoy coffee and the muffins we baked. We read the morning paper and discuss the news. We help prepare soup we will have with lunch. We complete our daily exercise routine.”

“We go out to our garden and attend the plants or water our indoor plants. We practice golf putting or perhaps play a game. Others may participate in dance/movement or art therapy. Our artwork brightens the walls and appears on the cards sold in the gift shop.”

Lunch and an Interesting Afternoon “We eat a leisurely lunch of sandwiches and soup, exchanging stories about our lives. We enjoy cookies and cake we’ve baked for dessert. With the help of other participants and volunteers, I clear the table and help clean up. “

“After lunch, we listen to live piano, guitar or violin music played by one of our many volunteers. We sing and dance or listen to classical music. Later, we watch an old-time comedy video or look through an art book or magazine.”

“We arrange flowers, donated by a local flower shop or picked from our garden. We pet a friendly dog whose owner is a volunteer. We discuss our first car, a famous artist, summertime, or other interesting topics. We sip a cold drink.”

“By the end of the day, I feel I have accomplished a great deal and have enjoyed the fellowship of the group. I am warmed by an enthusiastic invitation to come again.”

We are happy to announce that we raised a total of $17,221, which includes a $5,000 Match from The Retirement Research Foundation. We want to thank all of those who donated, visited our table in the Northfield Campus Atrium and who spread our message through word of mouth and social media. We are lucky to be a part of such a caring community. We look forward to next year’s #GivingTuesday and all the proceeds we can raise for another great cause!

All artwork is done by participants in the Adult Day Services program at House of Welcome.
